I've finished posting a long fanfic, complete at 49,000 words. It's a ghost hunting alternate universe written for Heathers (1988).

Veronica Sawyer can see ghosts but cannot fight them. Jason Dean has hunted the ghosts he cannot see since he was a child. When they meet at Westerburg High and dead bodies start piling up around them, they need to rely on each other’s abilities to fight a particularly ambitious and deadly ghost who’s out for their blood.

I'm still proud of how passively and innocently I phrased 'dead bodies start piling up around them', as if these dead bodies are just randomly turning up with no agency from the protagonists whatsoever. For these two characters, homicide is their idea of a fun Friday date night. They're like the Murder Twins, only they're not twins.

Congratulations! I've seen updates go by at an impressive speed.

I definitely got a "how do we keep landing in this trouble???" vibe from the summary. :D Fun to know that it is deliberate misdirection.

I didn't click because I've never seen any Heathers canon at all, so that + AU made me wonder if I'd really get what you were going for - do you think it can be sufficiently appreciated in that case?

I've showed it to a friend who was fandom blind, and he understood what was going on. I tried to explain the worldbuilding and introduce characters properly.

Fair warning, the source material has an unusually high proportion of horrible characters who do horrible things to each other. Most of the homicide is canonical but I made up the ghost hunting bits.
