Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you for writing for me! I hope you have a wonderful Yuletide. Our shared rare fandom is joy, optional details are optional, and please don't get eaten by bears.

Things I like to read include: adventure, ghost stories, humour, horror, slice-of-life, alternate universes, tragedy, suffering, irony, drama, mystery, complicated characters, complicated relationships, character development, underexplored parts of canon universes, plot twists, banter, capable/competent characters, female characters having adventures and being central to the story, femslash, gen, het, slash, rare characters in the spotlight, unusual stories, being surprised, and many other things that hopefully cover what you enjoy writing. I'd love to read a story you want to write.

If there're any questions about this letter, feel free to go through the Yuletide Mods, or simply write the story you want to write - I'd much rather read fic that went in a direction you liked writing than a story that stuck to a prompt that wasn't working for you.

For Yuletide this year an Amazing Anonymous Author gave me a brilliant, long, worldbuilding fic! It’s about a character I love.

Unys of Vespi by Anonymous

A girl is the heroine of her own story - even if that girl is a vain, petty, fickle pelflyt, and well aware of it. The question is whether it is to be a story of love, revenge, politics, or faith.

This is set in the Legendsong series, which are two Australian fantasy novels about an alternative universe. A dying musician and a martial artist from our world, sisters, must save a world strange to them. Keltor, a planet made by the Song, is mysterious and beautiful with silverblind soulweavers who see parts of the future, sinuous striking villainesses, scarred young singers, Heathcliff-like healers exiled halfway around the world for love, myrmidon warrior women, imprisoned unicorns, and spoilt noble girls with decisions to make in the immediate future.

That spoilt noble girl with decisions to make is whom the story’s about. It’s beautifully written with lots of worldbuilding details. Unys of Vespi has some character development coming up…

There were also four new fics in Baldur’s Gate this year.

Upon the Shoulders of Density by Anonymous - utterly delightful drabble (exactly 100 words long!) about Minsc and Dynaheir. Dynaheir is introduced to Minsc’s new friend.

Time For Small Business by Anonymous - a great parody about the things that happen when Charname’s life takes a more mundane turn. Minsc, Jaheira, Edwin, and Mazzy are all hilarious in this fic. Charname sneaked a peek up at the shop front. THE HAMSTER OF JUSTICE, read the signage in suspiciously good spelling. A smaller heading underneath it read YOU PAY, I PROVIDE.

This Yuletide was arguably Korgan’s, since he was present in two full length fics, or alternatively it was Minsc’s, since he was a major character in a drabble and a full length fic. Either way, more Baldur’s Gate fanfic is awesome!
